Description
No. 13 Pierpoint Street is a purpose-built structure that was originally the City and County Library, constructed around 1839. It later became the School of Art around 1876 and is currently used as offices. The building features stucco over brick with a hipped slate roof and brick chimneys, including a tall stack at the right end with an oversailing course and pots, as well as a tall rear stack. The layout consists of a central hallway plan with a rear range offset to the right.
The exterior has two storeys above a half basement, with four first-floor windows arranged in five bays. It has a moulded plinth topped with Doric pilasters at the ends and between the bays, along with a damaged entablature and a coped parapet. The central section projects forward and features two raised pilasters at the parapet. The ground floor has 1/1 horned sash windows, while the first floor has 3/6 sash windows, all set in plain reveals with sills. The central entrance is accessed by steps and consists of double 8-panel, flush-beaded doors with an overlight, flanked by pilasters with disc moulding. These are supported by scrolled and fluted corbel brackets, which hold a frieze adorned with three wreaths and a shallow pediment. Above the entrance is a raised panel with a 'pedimented' design on three feet.
Inside, the building retains original plasterwork and joinery, including panelled shutters on the windows. No. 13 Pierpoint Street is part of a group that includes Nos 4-8 (consecutive) and Nos 11, 12, 12A, and 13 Pierpoint Street, as well as Nos 4 and 6 Sansome Walk.
