Description
The Friends' Meeting House is a meeting house for the Society of Friends, built in 1701 with later additions and alterations, including an interior re-ordering in 1980. It is constructed of pinkish-orange brick in Flemish bond, featuring a stuccoed plinth and a hipped plain tile roof.
The exterior is a single tall storey with four windows. It has a plinth and tall wide 12/8 sash windows in near-flush frames, set within cambered-arched surrounds that include cambered arches and sills. There is a three-course band above the windows and a modillion eaves band. The central entrance features a projecting pedimented porch with double 12-panel doors framed by a plain architrave and a flat arch of gauged brick, along with a frieze and moulded cornice. A further entrance is located on the right return under a cambered arch, with a renewed six-panel door. The rear of the building has tall 8/8 sash windows.
Inside, the left part of the gallery re-uses original panelling and original oriel columns, along with some re-used panelled dado.
Historically, the Society of Friends began meeting in Worcester in 1655, and land for this building was purchased in 1700, leading to the transfer of meetings from Friar Street. The building exemplifies the form and side wall entry plan characteristic of Old Dissent architecture.
