Description

Nos. 3, 4, and 5 Sansome Place is a terrace of three houses, now used as offices, dating from the 1760s with later alterations. The buildings are constructed of pinkish-red brick in Flemish bond, with stucco on the ground floor, and feature stone doorcases, a cornice, and keystones. The roof is concealed, and there is a truncated party-wall stack made of pinkish-red brick. The layout is double depth, with a staircase situated between the front and rear rooms. The terrace stands three storeys high and has six first-floor windows.

The stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication on the ground floor. The first and second floors are fitted with 6/6 sash windows, all topped with flat arches made of gauged brick and keystones that have incised decoration, set in plain reveals. There is a continuous sill band on the first floor, and the second-floor windows also have sills. The building is crowned with a frieze and a moulded cornice, topped by a low, coped parapet. The ground floor features 8/8 sash windows.

The entrance is located to the right and consists of six-panel doors, with the lower panels being lush-beaded and the others raised and fielded. These doors have overlights with margin-lights and are set in panelled reveals. The doorcases are adorned with fluted Doric columns, a frieze with triglyphs and metopes, and a cornice.

Inside, the building retains original joinery and plasterwork, including panelled shutters on some windows and moulded cornices, including modillion cornices in the hall. The staircases feature a narrow openwell with stick balusters and wreathed handrails where they remain original.

Historically, this terrace is shown on Young's Map of 1779 and forms a good group with Nos. 1 and 2, No. 6, and Nos. 7-11 Sansome Place.
