Description

1 and 2 Sansome Place is a house and presbytery built in 1851 by J A Hansom. The building is made of pinkish-red brick in Flemish bond, featuring red brick window arches and a stone architrave at the entrance. It has hipped slate roofs, with an off-centre south brick ridge stack and truncated stacks on the north side. The two houses are back to back, differing in storeys but matching in height.

The north facade has three storeys with two first-floor windows. The ground and first floors feature 2/2 horned sashes, while the second floor has 4/4 sashes, all set in plain reveals with sills and flat arches of gauged brick. The entrance, located off-centre to the right, is set back within a segmental arch of gauged brick and includes a 6-panel door that is part-glazed, with two lower flush-beaded panels and a three-pane overlight with panelled reveals.

The south facade has two storeys and two first-floor windows, with 6/6 sashes throughout. The entrance is to the right, with steps leading up to a 6-panel door featuring lower flush-beaded panels and raised, fielded upper panels. This door is topped with an overlight and framed by a Doric architrave with pilasters, frieze, and cornice.

The right return of the building projects forward and has a 1:3 arrangement of first-floor windows. The left part includes a 2/2 sash on the ground floor, an 8/8 sash on the first floor, and a 4/4 sash on the second floor. The right part features a plinth and three 6/6 sashes on the ground and first floors, with all windows set in plain reveals and featuring sills and flat arches of gauged brick.

The interior has not been inspected. Number 1 serves as the presbytery for the adjacent Church of St George on Sansome Place and is grouped with the pair of lamp standards to the west of the church and with Nos 3-7 Sansome Place.
