Description
The war memorial, erected in 1921, is located to the rear of the Roman Catholic Church of St George. It is constructed of stone and features a copper statue of Christ. The memorial consists of a stone calvary cross set on a pedestal, topped with an open triangular pediment, and is placed on a four-stepped, square base. The copper sculpture of Christ is positioned on the south face of the cross, with a copper scroll above it inscribed with the initials ‘INRI’, which stands for Iesus Nazarenvs Rex Ivdaeorvm, translating to Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.
On the south face of the pedestal, there is an inscription that reads:
A. M. D. G. / HONOUR AND PRAY FOR / THE CATHOLIC / SOLDIERS AND / SAILORS / OF WORCESTER WHO FELL IN / THE GREAT WAR, 1914 – 1918 / (NAMES).
This inscription includes the names of a major and two captains, while the other faces of the pedestal list the names of 22 Catholic servicemen who died in the conflict.
Additionally, on the south face of the third step of the base, there is a biblical reference inscribed that states:
AS CHRIST LAID DOWN HIS LIFE FOR US SO THEY LAID / DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR THE BRETHREN 1 JOHN III 16.
