Description

39 and 39A St Nicholas Street is a house that has been converted into a club, dating from around 1736 to 1799, with later additions and alterations, including some from the 1970s. The building is constructed of pinkish-brown brick in Flemish bond, featuring dark red brick arches over the windows, ashlar sills, keystones, and a cornice. The roof is a renewed hipped design covered with cement tiles, and there are two brick stacks with pots located at the rear.

The main facade, which is on the right return, has three storeys and five first-floor windows. The first floor features 6/6 sash windows, while the second floor has 3/3 sash windows. All windows are set in plain reveals with sills and flat arches made of gauged brick, adorned with fluted keystones. The building is topped with a frieze, an ovolo-moulded cornice, and a low, coped parapet. The ground floor is obscured by a wall.

On the left return facing the street, there is one first-floor window. The ground and first floors also have 6/6 sash windows, while the second floor has a 3/3 sash window, all similarly detailed with plain reveals, sills, flat arches of gauged brick, and fluted keystones. An entrance has been inserted on the left side, leading up three steps to a six-panel door. The frieze and cornice continue from the front facade. At the rear, there are modillion eaves.

Historically, this building is located on the site of Trinity Gate, a small postern gate in the city wall. It is one of several 18th-century buildings in Worcester that feature similar keystones.
