Description
15 Foregate Street is a house, now used as a building society and offices, dating to the late 18th century with later additions and alterations, including changes made in the 1970s to the ground floor. The building is constructed of pinkish-red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco decoration and stucco over brick to the left return. It has timber eaves and a double-pitched roof covered in plain tiles, with end stacks; the stack to the left is made of pinkish-brown brick, while the other is stuccoed with a cornice.
The building is three storeys high with four windows on the first floor. It has quoins marking the angles. All windows are 6/1 sash windows with flat arches formed of gauged brick and stucco keystones, plain reveals, and sills. The eaves are plain. The ground floor has been largely renewed, featuring plate-glass windows. On the left side, a fluted Doric column is set in an antis. The left return, facing Pierpoint Street, has horizontal rustication on the ground floor. The entrance to the left features six-raised-and-fielded-panel double doors with a fanlight. The first floor has a sill band beneath two 6/1 sash windows and a 6/6 round-arched staircase sash with gothic glazing bars in the upper part. The second floor has two 6/6 sash windows with sills. All windows are set in plain reveals.
The interior has not been inspected.
Historically, during the 18th century, Foregate Street was known as ‘the mall’, and Tymbs’ Worcester Guide of 1802 described it as a fashionable promenade due to its paving and breadth. The building forms a group with the Shire Hall, the Statue of Queen Victoria, the City Museum and Library, and other properties on Foregate Street.
