Description

This is a house, later used as a shop, dating from around 1780, with alterations including a shop front added in the 1960s. It is constructed of pinkish-red brick, with the ground floor finished in stucco. The building is three storeys high with three windows on the first floor. The first and second floors have 6/1 sash windows set in plain reveals, with sills and flat arches of gauged brick, now painted. The ground floor retains horizontal rustication at the ends and a continuous wide moulded architrave with a central inscription tablet, topped by a band. There is a glazed shop front and two glazed doors. A coped parapet tops the building. The ground floor interior has been altered; the upper floors were not inspected. During the 18th century, Foregate Street was a fashionable promenade. The building forms a significant group with numbers 1-6, 57, 59-66 Foregate Street, Berkeley’s Hospital, numbers 11-15, and number 19 The Foregate.
