Description

The building at 59 and 60 Foregate Street is a pair of houses, later adapted for use as offices and a shop. It dates from the late 18th century, with alterations made in later periods, including a shop front added in the 1980s. The building is constructed of pinkish-red brick with a stone cornice and a concealed roof. It is three storeys high, featuring five windows on the first floor. The first-floor windows are 6/6 sash windows. The second-floor windows are 3/6 sash windows, set within plain reveals and topped with sills and flat arches formed with gauged brick. A decorative frieze and an ovolo-moulded cornice run along the top of the building, surmounted by a coped parapet. The ground floor has a Victorian-style shop front with a central glazed door. The ground floor interior has been renewed, while the upper floors have not been inspected. In the 18th century, Foregate Street was known as 'the mall,' and as noted in Tymbs' Worcester Guide of 1802, it was a fashionable place for promenades. The building forms a group with numbers 1-6, 57, 59-66 Foregate Street, Berkeley's Hospital, and 11-15 The Foregate.
