Description
This is a mid-18th century house, now used as a shop with offices, located on Foregate Street in Worcester. It is three storeys tall with an attic, and has three windows on the first floor. The building is constructed of reddish-brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with flat arches above the windows made of dark red gauged brick. The window arches are topped with ashlar keystones, and there is a renewed timber cornice and a plain tile roof. The first and second floors feature 6/6 flush sash windows with roll-and-triple-step moulded sills. The outer keystones on the first floor have incised moulding, while those on the second floor are fluted, with foliate embellishments in the central keystones. A wide modillion eaves cornice runs along the top. There are two gabled roof dormers with casement windows. The ground floor has a modern plate-glass shop front and a renewed, glazed entrance. The interior has not been inspected. In the 18th century, Foregate Street was known as 'the mall', and a local guide from 1802 described it as a fashionable promenade due to its paving and width. The building forms part of a significant group with the Shire Hall, the Statue of Queen Victoria, the City Museum and Library, and numbers 15, 19, 22, 23, 24, 28, numbers 33-46 (consecutive), and number 49 Foregate Street.
