Description
This fountain, located about 80 yards north of the Church of St Stephen, was built in 1883 and is made of painted cast iron. It features an octagonal shallow plinth and a circular moulded stem that has decorative foliated relief work on its narrower central section. Atop this stem is an octagonal pier with a gadrooned base and bull-rush relief work. The pier supports four large cranes that face outward, with large leaves entwined around their feet. Above the pier, the fountain has a vase-like profile that opens into a shallow dish-like shape, upon which stands a figure of a woman, approximately three feet high, surrounded by bull-rushes and pouring water from a vase. The total height of the fountain is about 12 feet. This large fountain, with its unique and naturalistic details, serves as a focal point at the north end of Church Green and is particularly significant when approaching the town centre from Prospect Hill.
