Drinking Fountain, Windmillhill Street, Motherwell

This late 19th-century drinking fountain is located on Windmillhill Street in Motherwell. It features a two-stage design with a domed canopy over a raised basin and a symmetrical layout, highlighted by a model stork as the centerpiece. The fountain is made of painted cast iron and has a square-plan canopy supported by columns at the corners, which have stiffleaf capitals. The second stage includes semicircular arches and a Lombard frieze around the reveal, with pierced scrollwork in the spandrels and rope-moulded central shield motifs. A narrow cornice is consoled at the corners, and the dome is adorned with pierced scrollwork and griffins at the corners, topped with an elaborate crown finial. The basin is splayed and rests on a composite column pedestal, with a two-stage foliate centerpiece that culminates in the model stork. The fountain stands approximately 1.5 metres tall.
