Description

Upper Lightwood Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the 17th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 19th and mid-20th centuries. It features a timber-framed structure with brick refacing and replacement walling, topped with tiled roofs. The building has a large brick external stack with tiled offsets at the rear, along with two external brick stacks on the left side elevation and one on the right side elevation. The plan follows a hall and cross-wing type, consisting of a main range with two framed bays and a two-bay cross-wing.

The farmhouse stands two storeys high, with an attic and cellar. The side elevation of the cross-wing displays a dentilled eaves cornice. The front elevation includes 20th-century casements: three on the ground floor of the main range, one in the position of a blocked doorway, and two on the first floor. The gable end of the cross-wing features a parapet, with a window on both the ground and first floors, as well as an attic light.

Inside, the roof is supported by queen strut trusses and single trenched purlins, while the main beams are stop-chamfered. The farmhouse is located on a moated site, which had recently been filled in during the survey conducted in June 1984.
