Description
Lower Howsen Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the 17th century or earlier, with alterations and additions made in the mid-18th century and early 19th century. The building is timber-framed with brick infill, brick replacement walling, and a stuccoed front elevation. It features tiled roofs, a central brick ridge stack, and three external brick stacks on the east elevation. The farmhouse is designed in an H-plan, consisting of a central range with three framed bays, likely including a cross-passage, adjacent to a narrow single service bay on the left and a three-bay right wing. It has two storeys and a cellar, with a few square framing panels visible on the upper left side elevation.
On the front elevation, the main part has a ground floor four-pane sash window with a cambered head, two first floor casements (one with a cambered head), and a 19th-century half-glazed door with a lean-to porch supported by timber uprights. The left cross-wing gable end features a bay window with a slate roof, a central four-pane sash window, plain side sashes, and a first floor casement, along with an outshut to the right. The right cross-wing gable end has a parapet, a bay window with a slate roof, a central four-pane sash window, plain side sashes, and a first floor casement with a cambered head. The interior has not been inspected, and there is a 19th-century outshut at the rear of the main part and service bay.
