Description
Lower Court Cottage is a 17th-century cottage that has undergone later alterations. It features a timber-framed structure, with sections that are rendered, painted brick, and wattle-and-daub infill, along with brick replacement walling and refacing. The roof is covered with asbestos cement tiles, and there is a large external brick chimney with tiled offsets at the east gable end, which has a detached brick stack. The main range consists of two framed bays and an intersecting two-bay cross-wing, with a through-passage at the junction. The cottage is two storeys high, and the framing consists of large square panels, with three panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate. There are large straight braces in the lower corners of the north and south wall-frame at the east end.
The front elevation includes a ground floor casement window, a raking-top half-dormer, and a part-glazed 20th-century door. The gable end of the cross-wing has casement windows on both the ground and first floors, featuring plank weatherings. The rear elevation has a ground floor and first floor casement in the main part, and two casements in the cross-wing gable end, along with a 20th-century extension in the angle.
Inside, the roof has queen strut trusses with single, trenched purlins. A curved arched doorhead is retained at the rear of the through-passage. The main beams are stop-chamfered. There is a single storey brick extension at the east gable end that encloses the external stack, and a brick lean-to extension adjoins the west side elevation of the cross-wing.
