Description

Windmill Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. It is timber-framed with rendered infill on a sandstone rubble plinth, featuring brick replacement walling and refacing, and a partly hipped plain tiled roof. The building has an L-plan layout, with the main part consisting of three framed bays aligned east to west, and a wing of two framed bays that adjoins the north side of the easternmost bay. This wing has an external rubble chimney with a brick stack on the west side. The farmhouse has two storeys and a cellar.

The framing includes three panels from the girding-beam to the wall-plate in the main part, and three panels above and below the girding-beam in the north wing, which also features long straight braces across the lower corners and short straight upper corner braces throughout. There is a collar and tie-beam truss at the north gable end, with five struts to the lower collar and two to the upper collar. The fenestration is irregular. On the south entrance elevation, there are 3-light casements on both floors, a 19th-century gabled canopy on brackets, and a half-glazed door. To the right, there is a 19th-century external brick stack. The interior has not been inspected. Windmill Farmhouse is part of the Shakenhurst Estate.
