Description

Upper Woodston is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the early 17th century. It was refronted in the mid-18th century and has undergone alterations in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. The building is timber-framed with brick infill set on a sandstone rubble base, with brick refacing and additions, and has plain tiled roofs. It is designed in an L-plan, with the main section consisting of three framed bays aligned east to west. There is a large external rubble chimney with two star-shaped brick shafts at the rear of the west bay, and another large external chimney at the rear east bay, which is enclosed by a two-bay rear wing.

The house has two storeys, an attic, and a cellar, featuring a dentilled eaves cornice. The framing is exposed at the west gable end and the rear, with seven rows of panels from the sill to the wall-plate at the gable end and five rows of panels at the rear. Long straight braces are present at the lower corners of both storeys. The roof structure appears to have been altered, likely during the refronting; the collar and tie-beam truss at the west end has two long struts to the collar and a subsidiary strut to the lower rail on each side.

The south front elevation has three bays, with all windows featuring gauged flat heads and stone sills. The outer bays have 15-pane sashes, while the central first-floor window is a 10-pane sash. The central entrance is highlighted by a moulded flat canopy, a moulded architrave, and a half-glazed door with panelled reveals. There are attic lights in the gable ends. The main entrance is located in the west side elevation of the rear wing. The interior has not been inspected.
