Description

Ryton Grange is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with later additions and alterations. It features a timber frame and brick construction, which is largely covered by pebbledash, and has a plain tile roof. The original house consists of four or five framed bays, with a later crow-step gabled projection to the left of the center and raised eaves at the front. The building is two storeys high and has a dentilled eaves cornice. The framing is exposed on the left gable end and the back wall, showing square panels with three sections from the cill to the wall-plate, long straight tension braces, and V-struts from the collar to the gable, although the front has mainly been replaced by brick.

The windows are all from the late 19th and 20th centuries, including three cast-iron casements directly below the eaves to the right of the gabled projection, and three segmental-headed casements on the ground floor. To the left of the gabled projection, there is one 20th-century casement directly below the eaves with a similar window beneath it. The gabled projection has one 20th-century casement with a segmental head on each floor. The doorway is located between the first and second windows to the right of the gabled projection, with a red brick ridge stack directly above. There is also a subsidiary half-glazed door to the far right and an external stack to the left in the angle between the main range and the gabled projection.

The interior has not been inspected, but it is reported to include an infilled inglenook fireplace, chamfered ceiling beams, and 17th-century oak panelling.
