Description
4 The Square is a house that was formerly three cottages, with two at the time of listing. It dates from the 17th century and has undergone later additions and alterations, mainly in the mid-19th century and late 20th century. The building is timber framed with plaster and painted brick infill, along with red brick additions and a plain tile roof. Originally designed as a two-cell plan, it was extended to the left in the mid-19th century by the addition of brick-built No. 5, which is now part of No. 4.
The house has one storey and an attic, featuring irregular small square panels in the timber framing. The right gable end displays long straight tension braces and queen struts from the tie beam to the collar. The fenestration is irregular, with late 19th and 20th century casements and one late 20th century horned sash. There are four windows on the ground floor and three tile-hung gabled eaves dormers above to the left, right, and centre. The entrance includes a late 20th century boarded door to the former No. 5 on the left and late 20th century half-glazed doors to Nos. 3 and 4. A ridge stack is located between the left and centre dormers, with an external end stack to the right.
Inside, the timber frame is largely intact, featuring chamfered spine beams in the old Nos. 3 and 4. The roof structure was entirely rebuilt in 1984 but retains the original pitch.
