Description
Lower Fold is a house that has been divided into five cottages. It dates back to the 17th century, with later additions and alterations. The structure features a timber frame, which is partly hidden by render, along with red brick infill and additions, topped with machine tile roofs. The building consists of a long range of four framed bays (Nos. 1 to 4) that runs north-south, with a gabled range (No. 6) projecting at right angles to the east. Behind this is No. 5, which is a late 19th-century red brick addition that is now part of No. 6. The cottages are one storey with an attic.
The framing is exposed on No. 1, but it has been renewed in the 20th century, and none of the original framing is visible from the outside. The cottages have irregular window arrangements, featuring late 19th-century casements, with six on the ground floor and gabled eaves dormers on Nos. 2, 3, and 4. The doors are boarded for Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4, with No. 3 having a gabled timber porch, while No. 6 has a 20th-century half-glazed door under a similar porch. A prominent red brick ridge stack is located between Nos. 2 and 3, with subsidiary stacks behind Nos. 1 and 6 (and the former No. 5), and an end stack at No. 4.
Inside, an inspection of Nos. 1, 2, and 3 reveals that the timber frame is concealed by wallpaper in Nos. 2 and 3, and there is a mid-19th-century cast-iron range in No. 2.
