Description
This building consists of a barn and stable that adjoin Hill Farmhouse to the east. The barn dates from the late 18th century, while the stable is a mid-19th century addition. Both structures are made of brick and feature dentilled eaves cornices. They have tiled roofs with parapets at the gable ends and between the barn and stable.
The barn has three bays, with a central wagon bay that includes opposed square-headed cart entries. There are blocked ventilation slits and some diaper ventilation patterns in the east gable end wall. The south elevation has a planked door in each outer bay. Inside, the barn features double, trenched purlins, with two raking struts connecting the tie-beam to the lower purlins and a collar between the upper purlins. There is also a door leading into the house in the west gable end wall.
The stable is a single bay structure with planked doors on the north and south elevations. At the east gable end, steps lead up to a planked door into the hayloft. Beneath these steps is a narrow, round-arched entrance that contains three progressively smaller round-headed archways, likely designed to restrict the movement of an animal undergoing treatment. The interior stall partitions have been removed. In the west gable end wall, there are three blind windows—two on the ground floor and one in the apex—each with moulded stone keyblocks. This wall would have originally been the external gable end wall of the barn.
