Description
Barley Cottage is a house that dates from the mid-17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features a timber frame with whitewashed brick nogging and brick, topped with a plain-tile roof and a large projecting brick stack at the right end. The cottage is a single storey with an attic and has a total of five windows, all of which are 2-light casements. A 20th-century glazed lean-to porch with a plank door and window is located at the front. The first floor has three 2-light gabled dormers. The square panel framing consists of ten panels high and three panels wide. The left end displays framing and four 2-light casements, with a 2-light casement flanked by single lights on the first floor. The right end also features framing, the stack, and a small window in the gable. The rear has three panels on the right side, while the rest is likely faced or rebuilt in brick during the 19th century. The rear also includes a 20th-century lean-to porch with casements and a door, flanked by 2-light casements, and a further small 20th-century window to the right. Two 2-light gabled dormers are present above. Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted to have chamfered spine beams, an open fireplace, and 20th-century stairs. The ends of old purlins are visible on the left gable end.
