Description
Folly Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the 16th century or earlier, with later additions. The upper floors of the earlier part are timber-framed, featuring wattle-and-daub and partly brick infill, while the 19th-century addition is constructed of brick with fictive timbering. The roofs are tiled. The building has a hall and cross-wing plan with the entrance located in the angle. It is two storeys high with irregular fenestration. The main part has a projecting gable to the right, which is underbuilt in brick and has one range of windows. To the left, a taller "hall" range overlaps, featuring one window in the centre on the first floor and one to the left of the entrance on the ground floor. The entrance has a four-panel mid-19th-century door.
To the left, there is a lower extension from the mid-19th century, which has two 20th-century casement windows on the first floor, one 20th-century casement with a cambered head, and one plain 19th-century sash on the ground floor. The gable end chimney stacks include one that belongs to the main part of the house. The rear of the building shows better-preserved timber-framing, and the cross-wing retains its jetty. There are various lean-to additions of later date on either side of the house and at the rear. It is suggested that the left-hand wing may be part of an earlier lower cruck-built main range that was partly raised and floored in the 17th century, which contributed to the central entrance portion.
