Description

Apostles Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 15th century, with additions and alterations from the 17th century, as well as further modifications in the mid-19th century and 20th century. The building features a combination of timber framing and sandstone rubble, which is completely rendered, and has tiled roofs.

The original 15th-century hall is three bays wide and aligned northeast to southwest, with a central stack and a through-passage at the southwest end. A 17th-century cross-wing has been added to the southwest, along with further extensions to the southeast and northeast. The hall range is single storey with an attic, while the cross-wing has two storeys and an attic, featuring jettied upper floors.

On the northwest front, there are three projecting gables, each with a 2-light casement window in the hall range. To the left of the doorway, which has a six-panelled door with two upper glazed panels, there is a 3-light casement window on the ground floor. The cross-wing to the right has a 2-light casement window in the upper floor and a pair of similar windows on the ground floor. Although the jetty is mostly obscured by rendering, it appears to be supported by plain curved brackets.

Inside, the farmhouse reveals two largely complete cruck trusses toward the center of the former hall range. The main room features a well-preserved early 17th-century steeply chamfered cross-beamed ceiling and a large open fireplace with a plain chamfered surround.
