Description
Empton Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with later alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features square-panelled timber-framing, with lozenge framing in the gables of the cross-wing. It includes sections of wattle and daub, painted brick, and 20th-century infill, along with a sandstone rubble plinth and some painted brick refacing. The roof is covered with Welsh slate. The farmhouse is arranged in an L-plan, with wings aligned north/south and east/west, joining at the southern end. It has a large main axial stack and an additional lateral stack to the east, as well as a through-passage.
The structure has two storeys. On the west front, there are four 3-light casement windows in the main wing, with one similar window to the left and two to the right of a 20th-century glazed lean-to porch. The inner door is ledged, and the gable end of the cross-wing to the right features a 3-light casement. Inside, the farmhouse retains good chamfered ceiling beams with ogee stops and three doorways with semi-circular shaped heads. The winder staircase, which is adjacent to the main central stack, has a wooden octagonal-shaped newel post.
