Description

Mahollam Cottages is a house that has been divided into three tenements and is partly in disrepair. It dates back to the 15th century with a hall that has an inserted floor and cross-wings added in the 17th century, along with some alterations from the late 19th century. The structure is timber-framed, featuring a combination of wattle-and-daub and brick infill, with weatherboard cladding on the north-west gable end of the cross-wing. It has a sandstone rubble plinth and a roof that is part stone slate and part tiled.

The five-bay hall is oriented south-west to north-east and includes a stack with two diagonal shafts that backs onto a through-passage. A cross-wing was added across the roofline in the second bay from the south-west, and a projecting cross-wing extends from the north-east end to the south-east. The building is single storey with an attic.

On the north-west entrance front, the gable end of the later cross-wing is to the left and features a three-light casement window, with a ledged door to the left of a similar window on the ground floor. The hall range to the right has a window opening to the left of a ledged door. The gable end of the inserted cross-wing to the right has one two-light casement window and a three-light window on the ground floor, along with a four-pane window to the right and a small lean-to extension that encloses a large external gable-end stack and a bread oven.

Inside, there are three cruck trusses that appear largely intact, featuring cambered tie-beams and cusped wind-braces that show signs of smoke blackening. The interior also includes an inserted 17th-century ceiling with moulded and chamfered beams, and a 17th-century staircase with moulded newels.
