Description
No. 18 Carpenter Road is a substantial Italianate villa built around 1855-1860, located on a corner site with Wheeley's Road in Edgbaston. The two-storey building features a four-bay front, with the entrance positioned to the right of the center and recessed. It has a plinth with diamond rusticated quotas, a string course above the ground floor, and a sill course at the first floor. The elaborate eaves cornice is adorned with superimposed console brackets. The hipped slate roof includes chimney stacks topped with ornamental pots.
The large porch is notable for its heavy blocking, which supports a triple group of coupled pilasters capped by pairs of console brackets at the cornice. Above the porch, there is a solid balcony with curved blocks at the corners and a cornice. The doorway features an inner rusticated arch and an outer smooth arch on piers. The windows are framed with architraves that have console brackets at the sills and heavy cornices. The first-floor windows display Mannerist details with miniature scroll pediment keystones.
The elevation facing Wheeley's Road mirrors the three bays of the main front. To the left of the front, there is a small gabled coach house connected by a screen wall. At the rear, a service wing projects from two bays and is similarly detailed to the main elevations.
