Description

Spring Cottage is a building originally constructed as an 18th-century cottage or farmhouse, which was rebuilt as a villa during the development of the Calthorpe Estate around 1825 to 1830. The structure is two storeys high, with a stucco facade and three bays, featuring an entrance bay that extends at the south end. There is a two-bay extension to the north that was originally one storey but was sympathetically raised to two storeys around 1940. The roof is hipped and covered with slate, with soffit eaves supported by shallow panelled brackets. The building has corniced chimney stacks and revealed sash windows, some with glazing bars, as well as French windows, all set in plain stucco surrounds. To the left, there is a canted tent roof bay window. The porch is located at the south end of the villa, supported by Doric columns in antis and topped with a deep entablature. Despite the alterations, the villa retains its early Regency character and is situated in spacious grounds at the end of the lane that runs east between Nos 61 and 63 Wellington Road.
