Description
The Edgbaston War Memorial is located in front of St Augustine's Church, which is a Grade II* listed building, on the south side of the church. Constructed from Portland stone, the memorial features a two-stepped base topped by a tapering, square stele. On the stele, there is a slightly set-back pedestal that displays carved wreaths on each side. Above this pedestal, a tapering pillar holds an eternal flame. Each side of the pillar is adorned with a carved robed figure that holds wreaths, with palm leaves carved at each corner.
The main dedication on the upper part of the front of the stele reads: "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF ALL THOSE WHO WENT FROM THIS PARISH AND FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919 AND 1939-1945." At the base of the stele, the inscription "FOR GOD AND COUNTRY" is carved. The names of those commemorated are engraved on the remaining three sides of the stele.
