Description
The Bournemouth War Memorial, designed in 1922 by architect Albert Edward Shervey, is a First World War memorial built in a Classical style. It is made of Portland stone and features bronze plaques and wreaths. The memorial consists of a cenotaph and a decorative 'Temple of Memory' that sits on a four-stepped base, located in the center of a raised, square gravel area enclosed by a stone balustrade. Access to the memorial is provided by stone steps on the north side, which are flanked by a pair of stone lions created by stone mason WA Hoare, one of which is asleep while the other is roaring.
Each side of the temple is decorated with a bronze wreath and garlands, and the four corners are embellished with Doric columns topped with Classical urns. A bronze plaque on the north side of the temple's base is inscribed with a tribute to the men and women of the County Borough of Bournemouth who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War from 1914 to 1918. Additionally, a second bronze plaque commemorating the Second World War is placed under a bronze wreath, honoring those from Bournemouth who lost their lives in the 1939-1945 War.
