Description

The Norfolk Hotel, built in 1897, is a four-storey building with a basement, featuring a varied roofline and constructed of stucco. The central section and wings slightly project, and each floor has tripartite windows. The central gable includes a triangular pediment with a painted coat-of-arms supported by consoles. On either side of the gable are two pedimented dormers connected by a balustrade, along with higher segmentally pedimented wings. There are extensions in a similar style along St Stephen's Road, although these have a plain roofline. The rear of the main block is made of buff brick with stucco dressings and includes a four-storey canted bay at the north-west corner.

The hotel is particularly noted for its impressive Art Nouveau iron verandah, which spans the entire facade between the wings and is raised on the basement. This verandah features Corinthian columnettes, openwork spandrels, and a repetitive sinuous leaf motif on the intersecting rails of the balustrading for the terrace and balcony. The same decorative motif is also present on the iron balconies of the ground and first floors in the west wing and the first floor in the east wing.
