Description

The Grand Hotel is a large hotel dating to around 1870. It is constructed of stucco with stucco detailing, and has a dry slate mansard roof behind a moulded eaves cornice, topped by a low cast-iron balustrade. The roof features pilastered, round-arched attic windows, each with a moulded coped gable, and stuccoed end and axial stacks, incorporating a moulded entablature and cast-iron cresting to the ridge. The design is influenced by the Italianate style.

The building has a large U-shaped plan with wings set at right angles to the rear, and includes the slight remains of an adjoining building to the left. The front elevation is four storeys high, with a regular facade of four windows on the upper floors. The ground and first floors feature an arcade of 15 keyed round arches on polished granite columns, set on plinths between turned balustrades, with a moulded cornice to the first floor, and a similar balustrade above the cornice above the first floor. Moulded hoods are positioned on consoles to the upper floors. The windows are mostly late 19th or 20th century horned sashes, although the second-floor windows are transomed. The rear wings are lower; the right-hand wing has channelled rustication to the ground floor, with moulded sill strings to the first and second floors, and moulded hoods on consoles. An elaborate iron hood covers the entrance to the right-hand return.

The interior has not been inspected, but is likely to reflect the quality of the exterior. The hotel is an imposing design in a prominent position, relating to other notable buildings on the Hoe.
