Description
The shelter located immediately west of the Belvedere on Hoe Road is a late 19th-century structure situated in a public park. It features a cast-iron frame with wooden partitions and seats, topped by a hipped dry slate roof that has deep projecting eaves. The building has a rectangular plan, with seats recessed on each side. The roof is supported by a central column at either end, along with four pairs of turned and carved columns and arabesque brackets that enhance the decorated frieze. The seats are slatted and rest on ornate cast-iron supports, and the ceiling is boarded. This shelter is part of a notable group of garden buildings on the Hoe, which were extended and replanned in the 1880s.
