Description
This shelter, located in a public park immediately west of Smeaton's Tower on The Promenade, dates from the late 19th century. It features a cast-iron frame with wooden partitions and seats, topped by a hipped dry slate roof that has deep projecting eaves. The structure has a rectangular plan with recessed seating on each side. The roof is supported by a central column at either end and four pairs of turned and carved columns, which are adorned with arabesque brackets and a decorated frieze. The slatted seats rest on ornate cast-iron supports, and the ceiling is boarded. This shelter is part of a notable group of garden buildings on the Hoe, which were extended and replanned in the 1880s.
