Description
Belvedere is a large summer house or belvedere located in a public park in Plymouth, built in 1891 on the site of a former bull ring. The structure features 17th century granite Tuscan columns from the old Market, and is mostly finished in stucco with decorative stucco details. It is a terraced building with three levels, each having an open colonnaded front. Each colonnade includes an entablature with triglyphs and a dentilled cornice, topped with a turned balustrade.
The lower level consists of four bays, with the central bay projecting forward and displaying a date panel flanked by pilasters. The next level has a semicircular front with canted ends, arranged in a 1:6:1 bay configuration. The top level has a similar but less curved front with a 1:5:1 bay arrangement, including solid end bays and a flagpole above the central bay. Additionally, there are two cast-iron lamp standards positioned at the left and right of the lower level. Belvedere is one of many notable buildings in this park.
