Description

Tinside Colonnade is a structure built in 1935 by J. Wibberley, the Plymouth City architect and engineer, with construction by Nuttall and Sons and John Mowlem and Company. It serves as a supporting structure for the promenade and sun terrace above the pavement and road, which are not of special interest. The colonnade features reinforced concrete construction, with a long double-curved promenade and sun terraces below. Above, there is a cantilevered canopy that supports Hoe Road, which is held up by a series of piers with cantilevers to the canopy soffit. The terrace, promenade, and road are enclosed by tubular steel and iron railings. On the back wall beneath the promenade canopy, there is a moulded relief map of Plymouth and the surrounding areas. Known as the Tinside Colonnade, it was part of the Lido, which aimed to enhance the bathing facilities in Plymouth.
