Description
The war memorial, located west of the west bastion of the Citadel in Plymouth, was erected around 1920 to honor the Royal Marines of the Plymouth Division who died in the Great War. The sculpture was created by W C Storr Barber and cast in bronze by AB Burton of Thames Ditton. It features a stepped granite base that supports three granite plinths. The central plinth holds a granite pedestal with a moulded entablature, topped by a large bronze figure of a naked warrior slaying an eagle. To the left is a statue of a marine in nautical uniform, and to the right is a statue of a marine in infantry uniform. A central plaque bears the inscription: "SO HE PASSED OVER AND ALL THE TRUMPETS SOUNDED FOR HIM ON THE OTHER SIDE," with additional inscriptions on the left and right reading "PER MARE" and "PER TERRUM." The memorial is enclosed by a perimeter fence made of iron railings on a granite plinth, featuring spear-head finials and corner and central stanchions with ball finials.
