Description
The Shelter by Smeaton's Tower, located on The Promenade in Plymouth, is a late 19th-century structure situated in a public park. It features a cast-iron frame with wooden partitions and seats, topped by a hipped dry slate roof that has deep projecting eaves. The shelter has a rectangular plan with recessed seating on each side. The roof is supported by a central column at either end and four pairs of slender turned and carved columns, which are adorned with arabesque brackets that hold up a decorated frieze. The slatted seats rest on ornate cast-iron supports, and the ceiling is boarded. This shelter is part of a notable group of garden buildings on the Hoe, which were extended and replanned in the 1880s.
