Description

Tinside Lido and Changing Rooms is a sea water bathing pool built in 1935 by J. Wibberley, the borough engineer, with the assistance of builders Edmund Nuttall and Sons and John Mowlem and Company. The entrance building was constructed in 1933 by the same engineer. The pool is made of mass concrete, reinforced with counterfort walls and inner walls, duct walls, and floors. The entrance building is faced in stone. The semi-circular pool has a diameter of 180 feet and features projecting jetties, with circular cutwaters at the entrance separated by steps. The entrance buildings are primarily used for sunbathing and have flat roofs and metal windows. The changing rooms, also designed in an art deco style, have flat roofs, square metal windows, and a prominent staircase that leads from the cliff face to the poolside and the changing rooms. The upper floor includes a balcony, while the lower floor contains the changing rooms, which were not inspected. The staircase features original tiling and balustrading, along with a relief figure. The pool is equipped with three fountains that aerate the water and is surrounded by cast-iron railings. To the northeast of the pool, the sea wall extends with three semi-circular bastion-like projections, between which broad steps lead to the shore. Above these projections are pavilions with railed terraces and integral shelters at the southwest end facing the pool.
