Description
The Park Keeper's Lodge is a building located on The Promenade in Plymouth, constructed between 1887 and 1888. It features a stucco exterior with stucco detailing and a dry slate roof that has projecting eaves and a verge showcasing exposed purlins and a shaped barge board. The roof is hipped at the center of the front and has sprocketed extensions over a verandah on three sides. The structure is supported by cast-iron stanchions or columns and arches, and it has a central stack that is stuccoed and panelled, complete with a moulded cornice.
The lodge has an irregular T-shaped plan with an extension at the rear right and is a single storey with a one-window front. The center of the front wing features a canted bay window, and there is a five-bay open verandah at the front with three-bay returns. The verandah is supported by slender near Ionic columns, ornate spandrels, and a fascia. On the wall set back to the right, there is a keyed, moulded round-arched pilastered niche that displays a coat of arms and an inscription. The return walls each have a pair of windows in openings similar to those of the niche, but these windows feature central mullions resembling near Corinthian columns.
The lodge is part of a notable group of park buildings on the Hoe.
