Description

The Royal Citadel School is a soldier's school located within a fort in Plymouth, built between 1895 and 1905, likely designed by T Rogers Kitsell. The building features dressed Plymouth limestone laid in courses, with dry slate roofs that have coped gables and projecting eaves. It has an L-shaped plan and consists of two storeys with a two-window range on the entrance front. The windows are either mullioned or single-light, fitted with horned sashes or casements, and all include glazing bars.

On the entrance front, there is a three-light window in the low wing to the left of the doorway, which has a small sidelight on its left. Above the doorway, there is a panel inscribed with "ADULT SCHOOL." The gable end of the cross wing to the right of the doorway features a transomed three-light window above another three-light window. The right-hand return displays an irregular arrangement of windows, including two gabled dormers that break the eaves.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, a garrison has been based at the Citadel since the 17th century. The old quarters were rebuilt following the Barracks Act of 1890, making this school, along with the Peninsula barracks in Winchester, a rare example of architect-designed barracks. Schools were established in barracks from the 1840s for soldiers and their children, and this significant example plays an important role in the overall function of the complete barracks, which is situated within the notable 17th-century fort.
