Description
The Royal Citadel Cookhouse is a barracks cookhouse located at the Royal Citadel in Plymouth, built between 1902 and 1905 by architect T Rogers Kitsell for the War Office. The building is constructed from dressed Plymouth limestone and features dry slate gabled roofs with stone-coped gables, as well as a dressed stone axial stack with a moulded entablature on the right.
The cookhouse has a rectangular plan with a short cross wing on the right and a 20th-century extension at the rear. It is a single-storey structure with a six-to-one-to-one bay front. The main range has six tall windows that break the eaves over transoms, featuring stone alternate round and plain gables. The windows have fixed lights above horned sashes, all with small panes. There is a rusticated round-arched doorway in the next bay, and at the far right, the cross-wing gable end has a ventilator slit above a three-light mullioned and transomed window. The end elevations display similar architectural details.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, a garrison has been part of the Citadel since its rebuilding in the late 17th century. The old quarters were rebuilt under the 1890 Barracks Act, and this cookhouse, along with the contemporary Peninsula barracks in Winchester, is a rare example of architect-designed barracks. The cookhouse served as an important functional part of this complete late Victorian barracks and is noted for its unusually rich design.
