Description
The Sturminster Marshall War Memorial is a war memorial erected in 1920, with additional plaques added after the Second World War. It is carved from Cornish granite and takes the form of a Celtic cross with a tapered shaft. This shaft is mounted on a square plinth, which rests on a square base that has a chamfered top. The four arms of the cross feature interlaced carvings in relief, while the shaft has panels on all four sides with more stylised carvings.
The front (north) face of the plinth is inscribed with the words: "IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR ENGLAND’S HONOUR." This is followed by the names of those who died. The rear face has the inscription: "PRAISE BE TO GOD FOR THOSE MEN AND WOMEN OF STURMINSTER MARSHALL WHO FAITHFULLY SERVED THEIR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919." After the Second World War, dedicatory inscriptions were added to the west and east sides of the plinth. The west face records the years 1939 TO 1945 along with names, ranks, and the years they died, while the east side is inscribed with 1939-1945 and the corresponding names, ranks, and years.
