Description
The Grove Park War Memorial is a war memorial and sculpture created in 1922 by Alfred Drury RA, with additional memorial plinths from the 1940s attributed to Walter Cave.
The memorial features a bronze sculpture of a winged Victory standing on a globe, with her arms outstretched and holding a small olive branch in her right hand. It is set on a Portland stone plinth and pedestal, which includes bronze plaques. The octagonal pedestal column has scrolled feet at each corner and a moulded cap. The upper plaque on the front face reads: "THESE DIED/ THAT WE MIGHT LIVE/ TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF THE/ MEN OF WESTON SUPER MARE/ UPHILL AND KEWSTOKE WHO/ FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919/ (Names)/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." The lower plaque commemorates those from the borough of Weston Super Mare who lost their lives in the Second World War, stating: "REDEDICATED / TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF/ ALL THOSE OF THE/ BOROUGH OF WESTON SUPER MARE/ WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR/ 1939-1945." The other faces of the memorial list the names of 402 individuals who fell in the First World War, with moulded stone wreaths positioned below.
The memorial is prominently located within a paved rectangle in a memorial garden in Grove Park, near the bandstand.
Approximately 20 metres to the north, there is a memorial wall divided into three sections, featuring Moderne-style moulded caps and bronze plaques listing the names of those who died in the Second World War. The central section is inscribed with "1939 1945/ H.M. FORCES" and includes 186 names. An enamelled crest of Weston Super Mare is placed between the dates. The side sections are inscribed "CIVILIANS" and list 113 names. Additionally, two plinths have been added on either side for further names. The memorial also commemorates casualties from the Korean War (1), Egypt and the Suez Crisis (1), Northern Ireland (1), and three individuals from Twentieth Century Wars.
