Description

The Former School of Science and Art, built between 1892 and 1900 by Price and Wooler, is located on Lower Church Road. This building is constructed from coursed rubble with Bath stone dressings and ceramic bands, topped with a slate roof. It is designed in a late Tudor/Classical style.

The structure is two storeys high and features five bays, with panelled and balustraded parapets. The central three bays are raised to form a full attic, with flanking niches and aedicules on the parapet, particularly ornate above the arched windows. The central bay is flanked by two-storey square bays that have tripartite glazing. The large pane casement windows on the first floor are separated by panelled pilasters with floral caps, while the ground floor windows have transoms with a segmental panel motif above them. A central arched doorcase is adorned with enriched terracotta details that fill the space between the bays. The north elevation showcases tall arched studio windows and tall stone gables divided by pilasters featuring ceramic panels, demonstrating a lively use of terracotta and ceramics throughout the design.
