Description
The Parish Church of Saint John the Baptist, located on Lower Church Road, was rebuilt in 1824 and has undergone alterations and extensions since then. It is designed in the Perpendicular style and features a chancel added in 1837, a north aisle constructed in 1844, and a south aisle completed in 1889. The west tower was heightened in 1840, and remnants of a former belfry and clock are still visible. The church is built from limestone rubble with freestone dressings, while the chancel is made of ashlar. The roofs are covered with slate. The tower is four stages high and includes pinnacles, and there is a single-storey porch on the south side. The south aisle also has pinnacles and a pierced parapet, while the north aisle features a battlemented design. Inside, the church has a wide three-bay nave with a panelled soffit and an arcade leading to the south aisle. There is a three-sided gallery supported by cast iron columns, which are adorned with carved Gothic-style panels.
