Description
The Mercury Printing Offices, built in 1885 by Hans Price, is a Grade II listed building located at 32 Waterloo Street. It features an exuberant Dutch Baroque style with some Spanish influence evident in its tower. Constructed from Bath stone and modern weatherproofing, the building has two bays. The right bay is 3½ storeys high and includes a shaped gable and multiple pilaster-work, while the left bay is a glazed 2-storey quadrant with mullion and transom windows that connect the Waterloo Street frontage with The Boulevard. The design is highlighted by a four-staged tower with shaped gables, corbelled pilasters, and an arcaded loggia. Notable decorative elements include a balustraded parapet on the quadrant, carved keystones on the second floor of the right bay, herm-pilasters, a gable tip oculus, a shell hood, and a wide-arched entrance with carved details in the spandrels. The building occupies an important position and has a distinctive silhouette that enhances its value.
