Description
HSBC Bank, formerly listed as Midland Bank, is a bank building from the early 20th century located on High Street in Weston-super-Mare. The building features facades made of limestone ashlar and has a hipped slate roof, designed in the Edwardian Free Style. It stands three storeys tall and is divided into six bays by bold projecting pilasters. The entrance bay is canted at the corner, flanked by two bays on the left facing High Street and three bays on the right facing Meadow Street.
The pilasters, which have Ionic capitals at the upper floor level, interrupt a bold moulded cornice that runs over all the windows and the parapet. The ground floor has a four-centred arched doorway with carved spandrels, flanked by one-light windows with moulded stone architraves. The flanking bays feature three-light stone-mullioned windows with similar architraves. The first floor is illuminated by a continuous run of paired small-framed lights set in pointed-arched surrounds, also with carved spandrels and a quatrefoil frieze. The second floor has small-paned lights arranged in a continuous run of stone cross-transomed and mullioned windows.
The interior of the ground floor has been remodelled, while the other floors have not been seen. The building is a fine example of the Free Style manner, characterized by strong articulation and distinguished by intricate carved details and features that reflect an interpretation of the Late Gothic style.
