Description
The public lavatories, dated 1905, are located on Marine Parade in Weston Super Mare and have been partly converted into a café and shop. The building features roughcast and applied timber-framing on a stone plinth, with a felt-covered gable-ended roof that has deep bracketed eaves and louvred ridge ventilators. At the center, there is an octagonal cupola topped with a lead-clad dome, a tall tapered finial, and a wrought-iron weathervane.
The structure is rectangular, with its back facing the beach to the west and a central portico on the east front. The lower flat-roofed north and south end ranges, as well as the range across the back, were likely added later. The north part of the original building is now used as a café, while the north end range serves as a shop.
The exterior is single-storey and was originally symmetrical, featuring an 8:3:8 bay east front with thin applied framing and roughcast panels, with glazing on the right. The deep eaves are supported by shaped brackets, and the central gabled portico has a moulded plaster tympanum decorated with arabesque and strapwork motifs, as well as putti. This portico is supported by thin moulded cast-iron columns with ornate pierced cast-iron spandrels. The interior has been altered.
