Description
The Magistrates Court, built in 1934 and remodelled and extended around 1970, serves as both a court and an integral police station. It features Portland stone ashlar and a slate hipped roof with copper flats. The building has a rectangular, almost square plan, with the police station and cells located on the ground floor and the courts on the first floor. A separate police station was constructed at the rear around 1970, but it is not included in this listing.
Architecturally, the court is designed in a simplified Neo-Classical style and comprises two storeys. The symmetrical north front has a layout of three main bays, a central bay, and three more bays, with a moulded plinth, cornice, and blocking course. It features metal-frame 12-pane windows set in moulded architraves, and a giant recessed portico at the centre supported by large square fluted columns. The portal inside has a boldly dentilled architrave, large coffered doors, and a stone carving of a wyvern above the landing window. The corners of the building are set back.
The west elevation consists of seven bays, with the second and sixth bays having advanced porticoes and large coffered doors, similar to those on the north front. The right-hand return has three bays, but the ground floor is obscured by a single-storey link to the later police station.
Inside, there is a staircase with a solid balustrade featuring ornate ironwork panels. Courts 1 and 2 retain most of their original furniture, light fittings, and joinery, while the offices have been largely divided into smaller spaces, and the internal courtyard has been filled in.
